Microsoft's Silver Light is a pretty amazing package that is free and can do just about anything. While I have done VERY little with it I will still say that it is totally awesome. Just to get an idea check out this link. It is an actual web based OS written in Silver Light. Keep in mind that this is not something new, Silveos has been an ongoing project for quite some time.

You can use it as a guest or register for more usage. This type of thing is likely to be the next generation of operating systems. As long as standards are kept by the machine makers this transcends the manufacturer and gives a valid possibility for truly cross platform operating systems.
I can actually foresee the day in the not distant future where you buy a system and, during the set-up, you are asked what operating system/s you want to run. you make your selections and go. Of course I would imagine that this would have to be a truly subscription based system.
One of the things that really gets me about this thing is that it is quite quick yet rather pretty. If you will look at the small screenshot below you will see that it handles, at least, minor aspects of the Aero desktop in Windows 7. Look at the translucent title bar in the open window.
