I'm running Windows 8.1 with IE11 on a desktop computer. Today and yesterday I'm getting the attached pop-up dialog. No matter whether I click "Yes" or "No," it comes back after a few minutes. I don't know which Web Browser it refers to as I have IE, Firefox, Safari and Chromium installed, but only IE in use most of the time. Gerry

Hi Gerry,
I would expect the cause to be an IE add-on but cannot say for certain.
I would suggest trying IE without add-ons to see if the issue persists. If you need help in reaching this form of IE let us know.
Report back the results.
As a note the alert would apply to what ever browser is in use when it comes up.

Run a Malwarebytes Scan too.

I found a link to a Microsoft page that gave some solutions. One was to run a "Fix it" routine, but it returned a dialog announcing it won't run in my Windows version (8.1). The second was to delete all browsing history, cookies and temp files. I did and the pesky thing has not reappeared since. I also ran a Malwarebytes scan (it's running in the BG all the time, but a did a fast scan and it found two innocuous-sounding items that I deleted).
Jay, I'm curious about running IE without the add-ons. In Windows 7 there was a start menu selection for running IE without add-ons, but not one in 8.1 that I know of. Is there a way to do it without disabling them one-by-one? Gerry

Two ways, Gerry. Open IE and in the address bar type: about:NoAdd-ons Or, you can open the run command (right-click on Windows icon in lower left and choose Run), and type: iexplore -extoff and hit enter.
Thanks for bringing this up, Gerry. I had no idea the menu item was missing. I suspect you can make yourself a shortcut to IE, then in the properties of the shortcut put the -extoff in there. That would open that instance without addons.

Well, I was premature it seems -- the pop-up has returned and is very persistent. It pops up even when IE without add-ons is open, and I've deleted temp files, cookies and browsing history several times.
Patty, when I open IE using either of the two methods you gave me, IE opens with a window reading: "Internet Explorer is currently running without add-ons," yet when I open "Manage Add-ons," in "Toolbars and Extensions" I see "Enabled" in the Status column for each, and the list of add-ons is longer (more items) than the one I see when I open IE with add-ons activated. Now I'm really confused. Gerry

Why in the world would you go to the add-on settings when running IE without add-ons? Of course add-ons will show as enabled as that is the setting for normal IE. The whole purpose of launching IE without add-ons is NOT to go and adjust add-ons. The test is to see if you see your issue without any add-ons enabled. As soon as you go to the add-on menu you defeat the test.

Oops -- mea culpa! Thanks for the logic, Jay. Gerry

So Gerry, I assume this popup comes up when you are browsing the web? I would say it is time to look at security settings, or what pages it is coming up on. It is going to be one of the two. You can try resetting IE (but then you lose all addons and would have to reinstall them), or you can just restore certain property pages to defaults. For instance, go to IE options, go to the security tab, and reset all zones to default. Do you get similar messages on the same page if you go to a different browser?
