Post subject:  Recovering from a flash drive

I recently sent my PC back to Dell for repairs. Before doing so i transferred data, such as documents, download, etc to flash drives. I also did this for photos. In the meantime i bought a new system planning to transfer data to the new PC. It worked fine in every case except photos. When I put the flash drive in the PC I get two error messages.

First. "You must format this drive before using." Second: "The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted."

I have never seen this issue before and am quite puzzled about it. The main question is how can I transfer the photos to the new PC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As always, thanks in advance.

First I would try a different USB port. If trying a front port go to a back.

Also try the flash drive on the original system. If the original can read the drive copy to another.

Thanks for your response Jay. I tried several other USB ports with no luck. The system this came from is no longer available (long story). I even tried another machine, again with no luck.

Before use did you format the flash drive? Was the original system Windows 7?

If the drive was formatted on a Windows 7 machine it is possible that it was done in a format that can't be read by Windows 10 which I assume is what is loaded on the new machine.

This is a long shot but try booting the system with the drive plugged in. It is possible that the system may not boot. If not just remove the drive and start the system again.

It is also possible that the flash drive is blown. After copying the photos did you test the drive to be sure that you could see the files?

Since one of the systems is new have you done all Updates and checked with the maker for updated device drivers, especially USB drivers if the system is using USB 3.

I see where I might have goofed. I did NOT check the drive to see if it got the photos. The drive may not have been formatted either. It was brand new. The system i used was WIN 10 as is the new PC.

I was able to use the original PC after some work but the results were the same. I assumed too much. I will try the reboot shortly. I'll advise you of the results.

The system rebooted but the drive is still not usable. Same error message.

I would say that it is likely that you have a failed flash drive or that it was formatted in a way that is not compatible. If the drive was new without your formatting Windows 10 should read it if the drive is healthy. If formatted FAT, FAT32 or NTFS you should also be OK. If formatted EXT2(?) or something like that it could be problematic.

Thanks Jay, I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but we tried.

Thank you very much for your help.

Do you not have other photo backups? If you use One Drive, or such, is your photo library included?
