C:\Users\Nancy\Documents\Documents\cc_20091006_113836.reg has been added to the registry.

What is it?
How do I find it?
I must delete it.

Thank you.

Post subject:  Re: One more thing.

the prefix of cc suggests that it is a registry cleaner (ccleaner) backup of items removed on 10/06/2009 by ccleaner.
the message states that it was double clicked to merge the items back into the registry.

Post subject:  Re: One more thing.

The second part - even Find doesn't locate the file.

I was trying to add 7Zip to Open With and this happened, instead.
I thought reg was supposed to be a fortress. CC reg wasn't supposed to be moved.

Where is it - in the registry, so that I can delete it?

Post subject:  Re: One more thing.

It's not in the registry per se. It's a file with a .reg extension. You would find it the same way as any other file. For example, you could search for *.reg to find all of these type of files. Once you find one then right click on it and choose edit. It will open in notepad and allow you to view the contents. Don't run the file, however, as it will modify your registry for sure.

The message means that the contents of the file have been added to the registry. It's not a fortress as these files are used to modify the registry all the time. CCleaner can do it easily. Apparently that's what happened here. CCleaner modified the registry with this file. It's unlikely though that it did it without your permission. And it's probably OK that it did it since it normally doesn't damage the registry. But if you have no idea why this happened then you could use System Restore to return to a time before this registry modification happened.

There's no way of knowing what changes were made to the registry directly without looking at the contents of this file first. It's possible the file has been deleted but try finding it using search as I suggested. If it truly is gone then the only way to undo the changes is to restore your system which may not be required really depending on what is happening.

Post subject:  Re: One more thing.

That was a great tip. It popped right up. Thank you.
Why do you want me to open it in notepad?
Why can't I just DELETE it?
I know how and WHY it got there, it just wasn't supposed to be moved. I was trying to do something else, which I never did. Enough already, for a little while.

Since I have your attention - there are a few clean-up posts at the place we fixed my computer. When you get a moment, I would appreciate your input.

Thank you.

Post subject:  Re: One more thing.

Opening the .reg file in Notepad will allow you to copy and paste the contents here and we can perhaps tell you what the file did.
You can most certainly delete it if you wish.
It merged the contents into the registry because you opened it -- perhaps by double clicking it, if the message popped up after you tried to click and copy, click and drag, click and open, or some such move, even if done accidentally.

Why are you using CCleaner?

Post subject:  Re: One more thing.

Stephen,

Now I understand - you said all that, but you didn't clearly tell me to bring it back to CH. Because of my explanation - how I moved it, and your feeling that it didn't do anything, I wasn't going to take the next step.
The kindness by you and everybody here is heartwarming!

I am not using CCCleaner, MacDuffie. I was trying to add 7Zip to Open With and when that appeared on my desktop, I clicked it without thinking. As I said to SB, I had no idea that Reg was so easy to add to.

The crap that has accumulated on my computer is A Stonishing. Canon camera dumped a million jpegs that I just located. Let's talk about bloat.
Thank you.

That reg file was indeed a backup of what ccleaner removed from a PC.

I deleted the attachment from the post as it was uploaded as a REG file. Here are the contents of the reg file:

Well it might even have done you some good, Nancy. It removed Driver Detective from starting with Windows. Error Wiz too.

I am a little confused. You told me to use Notepad to copy the contents to post it here.
I copied a a reg file. Why were you surprised? What should I have done?

Do you know w/certainty that this was a current action? I have no idea if I double-clicked it, but I DO know without a sliver of doubt that I did not try and fail - or try and succeed to - "click and copy, click and drag, click and open, or some such move."

Maybe the 2009 tech I hired once installed it.
...My current Silverlight version is 5.1.40416.0. The one above is 2.5 something.

It is meaningless to me, but it pleases me that Patty is happy.
I will delete it from the registry now.

Thank you.

PS - I just hovered on the file, so I could copy the full number, and not make any mistakes in search. I had a revelation. ( cc 2009 10 06) was the date my friend, Allan, moved my old Dell w/XP data onto my brand new Dell laptop w/Vista. The next day I hired a/the tech. I moved here six-years ago and completely forgot that I just passed the date. Happy Anniversary to me!

My suggestion was to copy the text into a post by opening the reg file using Notepad. You attached and uploaded the file itself to the forum. No harm. :-)

In your first post in this discussion you said: "C:\Users\Nancy\Documents\Documents\cc_20091006_113836.reg has been added to the registry."

If that was a message that you observed and wrote down, you double clicked the file for that message to appear. And it indicates that you merged the contents of the file to your registry.

The reg file was not "installed" on 10/6/09. It is a backup made by ccleaner when someone ran that program on 10/6/09. The file was created in case you wanted to undo what was done by ccleaner at that time. It was nothing more than a saved text file, albeit one that has consequences when you double-click it -- it merges the lines back into the registry. It may or may not be a problem, which is why Manny suggested that a System Restore to a point prior to the moment you observed the message you wrote at the beginning of this discussion. You cannot just "delete it from the registry" as it is a long list of registry entries scattered all over the place. It's your choice if you want to undo the merge by using System Restore -- presuming that the message was a dialog you observed on screen after clicking the reg file.

Post subject:  Re: One more thing.

Stephen,

I did! Should I have transferred it to another Notepad?
What program did you use to upload?

Yep, well I said I don't remember NOT dbl clicking.
My new laptop was born on 10/6, so in that sense, everything was installed that day.
Before Manny suggested SysRes (and to be honest, I didn't read his post), you told me to delete if I wanted to. I deleted it last night. (Is it called a key?)
No harm, no foul? Probably not.

The Firefox Forum told me SysRes could delete my saved passwords program, so I would rather not deal with that again.
I would prefer to use the computer for pure pleasure the rest of this year, at least.

The message was verbatim, as I know how critical accuracy and clarity is here.

Turn your clocks back tomorrow.
Have a great weekend.

Thank you.
